How to Treat and Prevent Chapped Hands

Proper hand hygiene is crucial for maintaining health and preventing the spread of bacteria and viruses. However, frequent washing and sanitizing can strip the skin of its natural moisture, compromising its protective barrier. Without this barrier, skin becomes dry, inflexible, and more susceptible to cracks, leading to chapped hands.

When the skin’s barrier is compromised, it becomes more prone to conditions like eczema and infections. Additionally, irritated skin might discourage regular hand washing. To address or prevent chapped hands, regular moisturizing is essential, particularly during the winter months.

MHCS recommends five practical strategies for managing and preventing chapped hands:

  1. Choose the Right Hand Sanitizer
Opt for alcohol-based sanitizers to effectively combat viruses.

  2. Dry Hands Thoroughly
After washing, dry your hands completely with a towel. Avoid air drying, as it can exacerbate dryness, itching, and chapping.

  3. Use Rich Moisturizers
Apply a thick cream or ointment after washing your hands or showering. Ointments, such as Aquaphor®, provide more hydration than creams, especially in colder weather. Once or twice daily application is sufficient.

  4. Try Overnight Treatments
For cracked or painful hands, apply a generous layer of ointment or cream before bed, and wear gloves overnight. Avoid cotton gloves, as they can absorb the product. Instead, use nitrile gloves to enhance absorption and protect your bedding.

  5. Seal Painful Cracks
Liquid bandages or skin glue can be used to seal painful cracks and promote healing. Note that liquid bandages may sting upon application. If red, itchy, or painful rashes develop, consult your MHCS primary care provider.

If proactive measures don’t resolve your chapped hands, it may be worth investigating potential skin allergies. Common allergens include nickel, formaldehyde, fragrances and latex.

By adopting these practices, you can maintain healthy skin and continue prioritizing hygiene without compromising comfort.
